Julie Andrews sang in Mary Poppins. Indeed, a bitter dose of angry words in need of saying, and set to a beat, quite effectively gets heard.
PopMatters Picks: Say It Loud! 65 Great Protest SongsWhen Alice Cooper’s “Only Women Bleed” was released as a single, it bore the abridged title “Only Women” (which is how it is listed in the official Billboard singles book). Anyone know why this was? Did the record company think the word “bleed” would be too much for listeners and disc jockeys? Comment by Tony S — July 21, 2007 @ 2:51 am Where is X-Ray Spex’s Oh Bondage, Up Yours! Peter Gaberiel’s Biko? come on. at least an explanation for these ommissions. Comment by todd x from San Francisco — July 24, 2007 @ 5:48 pm Great list but I gotta agreed, not having BIKO on the list is a HUGE screw-up. One can only assume Peter Gabriel’s “Biko”, from Peter Gabriel 3 (1980) was left off the list through clerical error. Steven Van Zandt credits the song and the singer for the idea of Artists United Against Apartheid.
