Joe Boyd with with Vashti Bunyan at SXSW
Like a Boyd on a WireWhite Bicycles: Making Music in the 1960sby Joe BoydSerpent's Tail April 2007, 304 pages, $18.00 [2 August 2007] by Steve HorowitzPopMatters talks to Joe Boyd, a man at the center of the folk, rock and blues scenes of the 1960s who lived to tell the tale. "The whole notion of folk music and an appreciation of things that are more rural and more traditional and more rustic than our lives are now is the privilege of the middle class."
One more time, without typographical errors - Re: Newport Folk Festival. The story as told by BOTH Seeger and Dylan, and confirmed by Boyd, is that Seeger wanted the amps turned DOWN (not OFF) so that there would be less distortion and feedback, and the lyrics could come through. A part of the thread here that frequently gets overlooked is that Seeger and his wife Toshi were, back then, among the lead organizers of the festival. Thus they routinely tended to such details. Dylan and Pete hung out together later that night in Newport at the musicians party and had a fine old time. Most recently, Dylan agreed to appear in Jim Brown’s new documentary about Seeger, and has nothing but positive things to say. Comment by Ed Renehan from Wickford, RI — August 3, 2007 @ 7:36 am
