PopMatters Picks: The Best TV, Film, and DVD of 2007
Oh man, so awesome! I am so pleased to see Pushing Daisies at the top of this list that I am grinning. I have no idea whether awards, critic’s polls and a core fan-base are going to be enough to save this show if the strike drags on (hopefully I’m being too pessimistic), but this is truly an amazing show. It’s so easy to be cynical about anything justifiably described as “charming”, but Pushing Daisies cuts through that posturing like butter. Comment by Patrick Schabe — January 18, 2008 @ 9:44 am Metalocalypse #10… Battlestar Galactica #5… The Wire #22? With all of the attempted profound social commentary on the site, this year-end list says alot about the fucking hypocrites who scribe articulate bullshit everyday at the place where really ONLY pop matters… Comment by Jordon — January 18, 2008 @ 12:10 pm Jordon: I think the reason The Wire fared so poorly is that there was some disagreement as to whether it qualified as a 2007 show or not. I didn’t think it did, so I didn’t vote for what would otherwise certainly have been at the top of my list. Comment by Nav — January 21, 2008 @ 5:41 am PopMatters sponsor Nav: Ok, I guess I understand why The Wire slipped so far, but if it didn’t run in 2007, why even put it on the list? Was it even on 2006’s?… I realize that these lists are supposed to be fun, and it’s just the compiled opinions of the Popmatters staff, but VH1’s The (White) Rapper Show #16, and It’s Always Sunny In Philidelphia didn’t even make the list?! Seriously, how old are you people? The writing staff’s median age has to be 40+, atleast. Which I know is supposed to be the new 30, but give me a break. 30 Rock isn’t THAT funny. Just my opinion though… And where’s all the (any) love for John From Cinncinati? That show had more spirituality in one hour than the entire Saving Grace and 7th Heaven series combined. Comment by Jordon — January 21, 2008 @ 1:53 pm The Wire was voted the #4 show of 2006. Not every writer lives in the United States, so some may not have had access to the fourth season until 2007. Don’t be so dismissive of Battlestar Galactica. You may hate me for it, but I listed it as the second best show of 2007. It wasn’t really even a question for me. I have no idea how old the staff at Popmatters is. I’m still a few years shy of 40 myself. And a few years shy of 30. Comment by Nav — January 21, 2008 @ 7:58 pm Jordon, I haven’t seen a lot of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but my impression of it has been that of—like everything else on FX—that it’s [genre] (in this case comedy) EXTREME! Check it out! Our characters are UNLIKABLE! And sort of AWFUL PEOPLE! Nothing against that, of course - I loved Arrested Development - but it all seems like a lot of “edgy” posturing. Maybe I’m wrong; I’ve heard lots of good things about Always Sunny. In any case, I’m well under 40 and 30 Rock makes me laugh, a lot, on a regular basis. Everyone I know who likes it is in their twenties, not their forties, so I’m not sure if you can really draw age lines here.

Not only was there not one single episode of the Wire in 2007 (it ended in 2006 and started in 2008) but Ugly Betty and South Park were better than it?
Please.
