Revinventing the Way We Live: Interview with Ray McCormack

[20 February 2008]

by Ellise Fuchs

"If we wait (for a time without enough oil), then it is going to be very, very rough for us all. It’s not a question of if or when it will happen, it’s a question of how it will happen," says the director of A Crude Awakening.

For Anyone who is not familiar with the “Peak Oil” debate, unfortunately most of the people interviewed in this film are what are called “doomers”.  They’re the fringe group that seems to be fascinated and look forward to the death of modern civilization through the peak oil scenario.  Either that or they’re interested in selling you books, become advisors, or make money off high oil prices.
While I do agree that Peak Oil is a real possibility, and something that probably will happen… these people are the extreme end of the spectrum.
so, if you do see this film, take most of what is being said with a grain of salt. Peak Oil is real, but the people in these films are the same kind of people that believe the Moon landing was done in a sound stage, George Bush was behind 9/11 and Aliens are in control of most of the major governments in the world.

Peak oil is without a doubt happening right now. Our way of life is already changing due to the decline in conventional oil. Witness the rise in food prices in the last couple years and the ethanol attempt continues, the price of gasoline over the last seven years, coal-to-liquids production coming online, airline prices increasing, etc…

Watch the movie and you will no longer take for granted the short time we have left in the petroleum world.

Dave,
Maybe you should look at the real reason those things are happening, instead of automatically assuming peak oil.  There are more “above ground” factors in the current oil situation than a declining production or scarcity of oil.  The war in Iraq, conflicts in Nigeria, rising demand from China and India, Nationalization of Venezuela Oil, rising speculation and investment in oil trading, processing problems in the US, Mis-management in Mexico.  Etc. etc. etc. etc.  Yes, oil is rising, and it’s going to get rough over the next couple of years (or decade) but it’s not because of a declining oil reserve.

troy—while the proponents of “peak oil” constitute only one side of the spectrum—i personally hope the wrong side, as i’m not inclined to start living a “mad max” lifestyle anytime soon—they’re scarcely as extreme as the folks who think the moonshot was a hoax or the people who think “Aliens are in control of most of the major governments in the world” (whoever they are). to lump them all in one general category is too easy by half.

now, as to whether bush was in on 911, that’s another question too, and appears, depending which poll you read, to be a belief held by ~40 to 70 percent of americans.
