The Long Road to Hoo Ha: An Interview with Supergrass

[21 April 2008]

by Pablo Amor

Only one band survived the highs and lows of the Britpop era. We talked about this endurance, a sixth album, and other lifespan issues with Danny Goffey, the one and only drummer for... yes, Supergrass.

The first Austin Powers movie didn’t come out until 1997.

Nice interview with one of my favorite band’s, and indeed Britpop’s only surviving band. yet, i feel i have to correct two glaring mistakes in the intro about Britpop :
- Ride was never a Britpop band. The group single-handedly launched Britain’s pre-britpop “shoegazing” craze (by putting My Bloody Valentine’s glorious noise experiments to pop-songs) and was for a while considered “brit music’s last hope”. By the time britpop arrived, Ride was already past their hey-day. Even then, lumping them with britpop is unfair : the two albums they released during that period were more retro-psychedelia than a celebration of Brit lad music, and obviously didn’t stand a chance of breaking through.
- The Boo Radleys were another shoegazing band that had a huge cult following before britpop ever happened. They did, however, jump on the bandwagon and enjoy a brief moment in the sun. They responded to the frenzy by releasing two self-consciously inaccessible albums and destroying any chance of sustaining their fame (more quickly and efficiently than Blur could claim to have done!)
Peace!

Hmmm, would 20 seconds of research kill you? Saying the surge of Britpop in 1994 was largely due to the popularity of Austin Powers, while sounding unlikely to begin with, is shown to be downright impossible when a moment to Google or IMDB the film title would show that it didn’t come out until 1997.

Brad above was kind enough to simply state that fact. I would add that you were a moron if you weren’t smart enough to recognise Supergrass above all those other bands and even your beloved Austin Powers.
