"Great Tenacity": The Real Dirt Interview

[4 January 2007]

by Ellise Fuchs

The Real Dirt on Farmer John combines home movies, archival footage, and recent imagery to consider the far from simple life of a flamboyant farmer. PopMatters interviews filmmaker and subject.

Hi, Nice interview.  Real Dirt is a great film.  Just for the record though, as the writer and producer of Mad Hot Ballroom, we were a small, two-woman team up until Slamdance.  We got a rep right before (one rep - albeit a mighty one—John Sloss).  As a businesswoman, I had done my homework about selling my film (all from reading books) and positioned it to have valuable “value-added” derivatives—such as the soundtrack, fiction rights, stage rights, non-fiction future rights and book rights.

I am all for art over commerce but to play in THAT game, you have to play THEIR game.  Sometimes a pity because so much great art is overlooked.  I suppose straddling both is the best one can do.

Anyway, The Real Dirt on Farmer john is a great doc and frankly, I’d love to see it as a fiction series!  Please do that too!  We need more great, well-written shows on TV also.  Just an idea.

Best,

Amy Sewell
