“We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold” remains one of my favorite opening lines. Thompson was wildly uneven but certainly worth remembering. I’ll have to read Steadman’s book, ‘cause no onw can dispute his importance in Thompson’s work.
