Boo! Seriously, I am just going to go ahead and be a smarty pants here and not give this lame review an intelligent rebuttal. Simply put: This movie is awesome and your snobby, self-indulgent review “sucks arse” as they would say in jolly ol’ england. You are smart enough to catch the satire, but you’re trying to be too smart to just enjoy it. And, I agree with the previous commenter. If you truly “got” the jokes in Shaun of the Dead, why get your knickers all in a bunch now? ha ha. mixing up sandford with somerfield is quite hilarious Comment by frank from CA — April 25, 2007 @ 12:30 am wow, 100 words to say “I didn’t get it”. No wonder I scarcely bother with Popmatters any more. Comment by Dave — April 25, 2007 @ 6:26 pm PopMatters sponsor Related articles

My My, what a poor review. First of all Hot Fuzz is set in the fictional village of Sandford, which is in reality Wells. Somerfield is a supermarket which features quite heavily throughout the film.
And to say the film doesn’t work when compared with Shaun of the dead because it isn’t based on a genre that is smart is absolutely ludicrous. Shaun of the Dead pays homage to and spoofs zombie films, Hot Fuzz cop/buddy action films (as well as countless others). I find it difficult to comprehend how you can judge a film by the intelligence of one film genre over another.
Where is the quality control on the net these days? Perhaps you should concentrate less on trying to “say something smart” and more time paying attention to and analyzing the film that you are choosing to review.
