It turns out that when Gertude Stein said, "A rose is a rose is a rose," she was lying.

I read Popmatters and I’m interested in a lot of things outside of my own experience.  That would include a story of the people who are myopically focused on rose competitions.  The myopically-inclined provide good stories for those of us inclined to take a step back and have a wider look around.

Guess it shows I’m not from Brooklyn, eh?

“Interested in lots of things outside my own experience”—no doubt.

But I think that the price of being a competitive rose grower, as opposed to just a regular gardener who likes roses, is a certain . . . single-mindedness.  (This probably isn’t true of roses only.)
