Let Me Be Your Man

Such structural spottiness -- great numbers punctuating humdrum character arcs -- is hardly unusual in a musical.

Cynthia,

I’m sure your rants against ATU made sense in your distorted head, but for people who have a grasp of the dynamics behind a musical think you’re a clown.

You mention that its not unusual for there to be a lack of character development in musicals. “not uncommon”! There never is Cynthia, I’ll let you in on a secret about musicals: there never is! The point that a lot of critics miss is that the characters were developed to revolve around the music, not the other way around. Where exactly would they have fit in more “character development”—which speaking of trite, “character development” is such as abused mantra that you people won’t shut up about, its insane. Movies that are made for purposes other than the characters themselves are fine.

Action movies and musicals simply are not formatted to have the character development that a drama would, period.

Save for perhaps the carnival scene (the only part of the movie I could have done without) this movie is breathtaking. See it for yourself with an open mind.

How could you get it so wrong, Cynthia? Just where in your so-called review did you once touch on the music? This is a musical - it’s ALL about the music. It is THE greatest possible tribute to Beatles music and Beatles fans everywhere love this film. If you can’t appreciate people just bursting into song for no apparent reason, then you have no business writing a musical review in the first place. Especially not this one. Boooooo! And I don’t mean that for Halloween.
