Salt and Saffron

The disease furthers Heroes' allegorizing of its genetic mutants as outsiders, aliens, and queers.

Overall a pretty good summary of the show. I agree with the unfortunate connections with the X-Men trilogy (which I mainly enjoyed). Additionally, I thought the reappearance of our favorite brooding hero at the end, being reborn with seemingly increased powers, was also strongly tied to the plot of the third X-Men movie. I’m also surprised at the lack of discussion of the new villain who has marked the cabal members for death (Madame Petrelli & Hiro’s dad), as well as the continuation of little Molly’s villain who can “see her”.

I really enjoyed the first season of this show, and I’m worried that they are going to run this season into lameness - but it’s too early to tell.

Interesting choice of epigraph, Todd, as it was also my favourite line of the episode, speaking to a history that gave authenticity to a very bizarre character. Salt had been a highly valued commodity for thousands of years by that point in history, and in several parts of the world, including China, it was even used as currency. Saffron meanwhile was the world’s most valuable spice, and came mostly from around the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and China, not Japan. With that one line, Kensei suggested that not only had he travelled widely, but was perhaps much older than he appeared.
