Review: The Hurricane (1999)Cynthia FuchsThere's a moment partway through The Hurricane that may cause you to catch your breath. It's a cramped shot, as are most of those showing Ruben Hurricane Carter (Denzel Washington) in his New Jersey State Prison cell.

You seem to forget that those of us who are neither white nor necessarily liberal, may have enjoyed this film because it presented a strong black male professional in a time that didn’t frequently present that image. Sidney Poitier wasn’t a Stepanfetchit or a comedic sidekick. He was his own man. Watching him brought great joy to African Americans who knew that man existed in the world but was never recognized in film.
