Pravda: A Novel

by Edward Docx

Mariner

March 2008, 400 pages, $13.95

by David Pullar

The odd mixture of cowardice and courage in all of us, the curious ties of family and genetics, and the eternal quest for significance are all contained within this novel.

what’s with the new title?  when it was long-listed for the booker prize last year, it went under ‘self-help’.  were too many potential readers and customers confusing it with the likes of deepak chopra and dr. phil?

at any rate, this was one of my favourite reads of 2007 and i’d recommend it to those who enjoyed jonathon franzen’s ‘the corrections’, of which this reminded me in many respects.

I’m not entirely sure - I actually read the UK version for this review.

Of the two, “Self-Help” is much more appropriate.
