stuart henderson is a terrible reviewer, and he does “the gods of times square” an irresponsible disservice by his lack of attention. i caution you all to take his review with a grain of salt. apparently, he is incapable of understanding an abstract work of documentary cinema because he needs the guiding hand of an “authoritative voice,” in other words, a narration track.
his need for narration reveals the laziness of his mind and heart and the shallowness of his cinema verite language....
he criticizes the quality of the video
but does not mention it was mostly shot from 1993-1998,
on hi-8, a format that preceded HD or mini DV, and was known for occasional video drop-out.
big damn deal!
who are we kidding, this is only video.....
hi-8 drop-out sends mr. henderson to the bathroom for a snobby puke.
he knows squat about the dangers of times square in the period of 1993-1998, though he says that there is nothing in the doc that is threatening.
the old times square is now gone.....one can not go there anymore to experience the former riviera of free speech;
it’s been swallowed by the clean machine of corporate entertainment and right wing politics.
knowing as i did, that this fabulous place of freer expression and diversity was about to end, i did wish to show as much beauty as possible.
but to mr. henderson beauty can be repetitive;
SAD am i to say, on this valentine’s day, that beauty flew far above this reviewer’s sophomoric head.
