Didactic, straightforward, and trying too hard to speak to me “in a language I’ll understand”, this film made me want to cut class and go smoke cigarettes in the parking lot.
I am college educated and an attorney and I can say that I don’t buy it. I am not religous, but I do think that modern environmentalism is fast becoming a religion, and the religous zealots are the people who continuously scream about this stuff in chicken little mode.
What do I base this on, history, science and common sense. Like all religions, environmentalists need funds and jobs for its believers. In the 80’s they warned about a form of man made global warming called deforestation. This was a cause celeb with rainforest restaurants, big celebrity speeches and documentaries. This went away not because it was wrong per se but because 1. First world people would not give money to a potential danger in the future and not in their backyard and 2. The places where deforestation occurs are in third world countries where people need farmland, are too poor to care or to listen, etc..
So the solution was to repackage this threat as “global warming” and to try to do the impossible, which is to force first world countries to completely change their lifestyles. The “threat”, like religous ministers asking for money on television, keeps becoming more and more dire, not because it is, but because people need to be scared something is happening NOW! Just eight years ago scientist said global temperatures would maybe rise a degree or two in a hundred years. (I was paying attention) Then it was by 2020, and now we must act immediately!
The threat hasn’t changed, but to get funds and power from this dead horse, the warning become more and more dire to scare people into believing the threat is real.
The science proves that global tempertures have not risen since 1998. Also, there has been a .6 degree rise in Martian temperatures in a comparable time. (must be those martians driving their SUV’s) Considering our temperature went up one degree and Mars is twice as far away to the sun as us, maybe there is a correlation? Nah
The earth is four billion years old, and the evidence shows the earth has been much hotter than now, and so cold that there was ice ages. There is no “thermostat” for the earth showing what temperature it should be. It is one degree hotter today than 100 years ago. What about 200 years ago? five hundred? a thousand? five thousand? We have no idea.
People lived completely fine eight hundred years ago when it was hotter and some of greenland was actually settled by vikings. (it is a giant glacier now) Hotter temperatures may actually increase crop yields and make more land arible.
There is zero credible evidence that “global warming” will cause major storms or hurricanes. Despite the one bad year when Katrina hit, the last few years have preduced below average hurricane activity.
After 20 more years of study, I may give this situation more thought. Until then, its chicken little.

Just for people’s education about Mars, here is the right wing religous link on the article from the evil National Geographic.
