Releasing a mere two albums, Jellyfish is one of the seminal bands that invigorated 90s indie pop. Fortunately, former member Jason Falkner is still on the case. His second solo release, produced by Nigel Godrich (the genius knob-twister behind Radiohead’s OK Computer), continues in the Jellyfish vein of Queen-drenched pop, while adding a dose of psychedelia, power pop, and shifting sonic dynamics to boot. Starting with an English music hall-style intro “The Invitation,” (that recalls moments of Queen’s A Night At The Opera), the record quickly morphs into the melodic rocker “Author Unknown.” “Revelation” is a lush, orchestral number that is drenched in dreamy, ethereal harmonies, while “My Lucky Day” and, to a lesser extent, “Holiday” boast an 80s new wave feel with synthesizer parts that make the tracks sound reminiscent of Modern English crossed with Sweden’s This Perfect Day. A bit of the Radiohead/Nigel Godrich sense of shifting dynamics is at work on “I Already Know.” All of this most assuredly means that Falkner is still at the forefront of the pop scene.
