Hagans

Animation Imagination

(Blue Note)

by PopMatters Staff

As proof that Nils Petter Molvaer's fusion of Miles Davis-era jazz and modern electronica is no fluke, another superb trumpet player, Tim Hagans, takes a stab at drawing the two musical worlds even closer on Animation Imagination. Like Molvaer, Hagans lives and breathes Bitches Brew, but also mines late 60s/early 70s jazz-funk, while seeming being equally entranced by Goldie and the drum'n'bass set. Basing half the songs on preprogrammed tracks by DJ Smash, DJ Kingsize, and Matthew Backer, Hagans lays down mostly spontaneous first takes upon the electronic grooves. The real sense of freshness in Animation Imagination also springs from the free improv sessions on the other tracks.
