Joey Youngman

Franchise Player 02

[Mixed by Joey Youngman]

(Franchise Player)

US release date: 22 May 2007
UK release date: Available as import

by John Bergstrom

Getting his start in southern California and currently operating out of Austin, Texas, Joey Youngman doesn’t let up on this, the second volume in Franchise Player’s new DJ mix series. The thumping, frenetic brand of house music on display here makes references to the 1990s, when house and the newly-resurgent UK indie scene were commingling. Hence, there’s wah-wah guitar, loud ‘808 and ‘909 hi-hats, and R&B and funk references. Apparently, nowadays this is being called “dirty disco”, although there’s some UK Garage thrown in as well. Silly subgenres aside, the fluid bassline of Jay-J & Miguel Migs’ “Rock the Spot”, the Prince-like edge of Digital Villains’ “Busted Speaker”, the effortless soul-jazz of Kenlou’s “Moonshine”, and Youngman’s own expansive “Dilated” all rock the house. Throughout, the vibes are set on “party all night”; and, while this can exhaust your ears, it can just as easily make you get up and shake it.
