DJ Chris Fortier offers international underground dance music, as befits an artist who regularly performs at hotspots everywhere from Europe to Tokyo to Buenos Aires. He remixes the beats so that they seem to crystallize out of thin air and drop to the floor. Fortier uses silence to his advantage so that even when the background is busy it seems as if there is nothing going on but the immediate pulsating moment in the foreground. Those electronic squiggles, the odd sample, the funky bass line, all take on a separate identity. This can make things a little anxious as the music never really comes together, but that is also the point. These sounds are meant to be understood separate from time and place. They are the global manifestations of an identity that doesn’t say we are the world, but that the world exists only in the present moment.
