Thus, this sequel to On the Brink: Return of the Instro-Hipsters has missed its calling, because it would’ve made the perfect soundtrack, right down to its generally undistinguished, picked-over-sounding material. Most of the tracks hail from 1965-68. As you might expect, then, boisterous brass, various organs, and an overall sense of mustiness dominate. The Outer Limits’ “Black Boots” has a solid, heavy, sample-worthy rhythm, while The Johnny Harris Orchestra’s “Lulu’s Theme” is a fairly funky take on the Kinks’ “Lola”, and Harold McNair’s “The Hipster” features Rashaan Roland Kirk-like flute blowing. Most of this, however, is just too dated, wacky, and over-the-top to interest anyone except self-designated curators and shag carpet afficcionados.
