This is the time of year when all the broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, and the CW) put out those cheap, cheesy “preview” specials. They often put them on at odd times, and mostly focus on what seems to be the worst of what they have to offer. Consider this as an improved version of that.
The following are previews of the new shows that will be airing on Friday nights, along with a little background information and some speculation on how long they might last.
At 8 pm, ABC brings us Secret Millionaire. It’s essentially the same thing as CBS’ wildly successful Undercover Boss.
Generally, people don’t like seeing the same ideas done over and over again. Most viewers, preferring the original, will probably tune into something else instead.
NBC’s alternating new episodes of the celebrity genealogy hunt Who Do You Think You Are? with a new reality series called School Pride. In it, underfunded schools in impoverished areas get dazzling free renovations.
ABC’s similar Extreme Makeover: Home Edition has done well, so that’s good news for School Pride. However, will viewers get confused about whether it or the better than advertised Who Do You Think You Are? will be on at what time?
ABC will air Body of Proof at 9 pm. It’s another character-driven crime procedural, focusing on a female medical examiner who has a “unique” way of solving crimes.
Usually, CBS’ CSI: NY trounces its competition, so I would be surprised if Body of Proof lives to see a second season.
At 10 pm, CBS debuts the family police drama “Blue Bloods”. It boasts an all-star cast, with Bridget Moynahan, Tom Selleck, Donnie Wahlberg, and Will Estes all playing major roles.
This is arguably the biggest new show of the season. The only thing that can possibly sink it is if the network deems its possible high-costs too expensive to put up with.
Airing at the same time on NBC is Outlaw, in which Jimmy Smits stars as a former Supreme Court Justice who starts his own law firm.
Outlaw has a similar concept as the popular ‘80s series, The Equalizer, but I still think CBS’ Blue Bloods will send it on the quick road to cancellation.
