Oscar-watcher Matt Mazur dips into the history of this category and compares the Academy nominees with his own (frequently better) nominees!

Oscar Winner: Olivia de Havilland took home her second round of Academy hardware for her iconic, classic Catherine Sloper this year, three years after her first for To Each His Own.

Mazur Winner: A very tough call, with each nominee deserving in their own way. To go against the grain, I will stick with noir babe Peggy Cummins, who played her femme fatale with a distinctly loud bang. As the gun-toting, slightly petulant Laurie Starr, a trigger-happy young woman who goes on a murderous crime spree, Cummins was all crackling energy and sharp edges, a rarity in 1949.
