Glenn Beck has certainly picked some odd fights in his day.
While the Fox News anchor has made targets out of the likes of Van Jones and George Soros to much media commotion, sometimes he does the exact opposite, instead responding to criticism by only criticizing back, whether it be responding to Rep. Anthony Weiner’s allegations of Beck supporting Goldline’s shady business practices by establishing the juvenile WeinerFacts.com or calling Avatar a “Smurf-murdering” movie following James Cameron’s criticisms against him (these latter two attempts are not considered his most successful).
Yet Beck went after a completely out-of-left-field target on his 28 April Fox News program, going after My Chemical Romance, of all bands. In a show centered around how our children are being indoctrinated by progressive thoughts in our public education system (he noted how he home schools his own children), he took time to focus on Glee, and how the inclusion of the My Chemical Romance song “Sing” is “propaganda—and it’s an anthem; it’s an anthem saying ‘join us!’ How can you and I possibly win against that?”
His problem was more with the song than the show, even as he alternated between calling Glee itself “brilliant” and a “horror show”, noting that it has “no values”, but praised the “brilliant performances”. Yet his criticism against the song—one of the many anti-corporate screeds on My Chemical Romance’s latest post-apocalyptic concept album—is that it is merely “propaganda”, and aside from reading a few lyrics, doesn’t specify to say as to what this subversive song is doing to America’s youth.
As such, it’s an unusual moment to spotlight. This over the show’s covers of “Like a Virgin” or “Highway to Hell”? “I’m a Slave 4 U” or “Losing My Religion”? What about the unforgivable sin of covering Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister”? Should we be afraid of our children suddenly becoming overnight Marxists? We look forward to your comments.
