Oscar Winner: Emma Thompson, whose wit and quiet fury were memorable in this Merchant-Ivory film. Thompson was a solid winner.
Mazur Winner: I’ve always felt that Thompson’s fellow nominee Mary McDonnell gave a more interested, layered, and revelatory performance in John Sayles’ Passion Fish as a soap opera diva who returns to her Bayou roots following a traumatic accident that leaves her in a wheelchair. McDonnell brings a resilient spark to her character, a lost soul who must learn to cope with her new way of life in a new place. She’s funny, touching, and above all else, completely fierce.
