antiMusic ain’t for sale

In this public letter, the folks at website/news service antiMusic blast back at a PR firm who was trying to buy them off for good reviews.  Nowadays, people are so cynical about the press that buying editorial favor that might not surprise them.  With many pubs trying to survive, some have taken to ask for labels for ad money to ensure that their product gets reviewed (NY Rock did this for instance but insisted that it wouldn’t mean that they had to give a positive review).  The antiMusic folks note that several other pubs shunned the PR company for trying the same tactic.  Still, you have to wonder if some mags did say yes…

“No Need To Name Names”? Publicity stunt, she wrote.

I’ll name names. I got the email for my site and was one of the ones that complained to Universal. The PR company was Total Assault and they sent out a retraction the next day but here is the email they sent.

Hey so I need to ask you to really look into committing to doing what you can to feature the following artists with the corresponding dates below on sitename.com.

Universal Artists:

Alter Bridge – week of release is October 9th

Faber Drive – week of release is October 9th

Another Animal – week of release is October 2nd

These are all Universal Music Group artists and there will be a budget for the entire group for advertising.  This is a great opportunity to show these guys what you can do and I want to help you get your foot in the door with the label on the advertising side.  Even if it is a small buy they make this is a great way to start building a relationship with them and I’m not promising anything but they will definitely see your work you do for the band on sitename.com.

Let me know if I can confirm you for their week of release.  If I do not already have your advertising sheets from the Invitro campaign, which, by the way, was given back to the label to decide who they are going with, please send them over.  Make sure you let me know if you can commit to a feature for either a review of the record or an interview.

Please let me know and I really appreciate this so much.

Some of the labels I suspect do this also are Equal Vision and Victory.

Some of the sites that appear to do this include Punkbands.com, ThePRP.com, SMNnews.com, Blabbermouth.net
