Call for Papers: Anachronism in Art - Pros and Cons

50 Cent's piece too hot for ads?

Friday, Nov 11, 2005

Quite an interesting article article from Alternet about 50 Cent’s new movie.  Whether or not you care like his music or acting career (that doesn’t really include me), you have to admit that there’s some kind of disturbing double standard going on here, especially as his particular ad with the mic in one hand and the gun in the other hand isn’t any better or worse than many other action movie promo photos or posters with the hero blasting away some unseen bad guy (as the Alternet article points out).  It might be easy to say that this is a race thing but since black groups are protesting this too, it’s more exact to say that this is more specifically rap hating.  So what’s the right answer, to keep 50’s visage off the streets, billboards and the side of buses or just wipe out any movie (or video) ad like that just to be fair or consistent?  Or is this just another scapegoating of social and political groups who want the entertainment biz to scrub everything down and let parents off the hook of talking to their kids about issues of violence?
