Ruth Pointer - 16 November 2008: Hopedale, MA

Words by Christian John Wikane and Pictures by Craig Bailey

Thirty-five years ago, the Pointer Sisters debuted with one of the most musically eclectic albums ever to grace the pop and R&B charts. From Allen Toussaint (“Yes We Can Can”) to Lambert, Hendricks and Ross (“Cloudburst”) to Willie Dixon (“Wang Dang Doodle”) to their own jazz-inflected compositions (“Jada”, “Sugar”), Ruth, Anita, Bonnie, and June Pointer effortlessly navigated a range of musical and vocal styles. The Pointer Sisters (1973) marked their first of five albums for Blue Thumb Records with producer David Rubinson before Bonnie Pointer ventured solo on Motown and the remaining trio teamed with Richard Perry for a string of memorable pop and R&B classics on Planet/RCA. Then and now, their versatility remains unparalleled.

PopMatters recently sat down with Ruth Pointer at her home in Massachusetts to discuss the incredible legacy of the Pointer Sisters. She also gave us a peek into her “trophy” room! Look for the complete interview in early 2009!

Hello Ruth, how are u? My name is Clinton I met you, Anita and June in Chicago 1995. You all were playing a hotel party. You also know my friend Paula and her daughter Sydney from Chicago as well. I really love you all, you are the greatest! I still miss June. I got a chance to hang out with her a couple of times. She was so funny and sweet. I followed your hits: slow hand, he’s so shy, fire, jump for my love, automatic, neutron dance and so many other great hits the pointers created. I know your brother fritz working at the jr college in san pablo, ca. He’s nice to me. I’m sorry to hear bout the lost of baby sis june. June cud sing!. I wish you could of bring back your sis bonnie back into the group to give the pointers their sounds back!. Ruth i love the way you sing on: waiting on you, going down slowly, automatic, you gotta believe and back in my arms. Your voice is truly gospel like fritz told me. I luv you ruth!. God bless- fr: jerome.

Hi Ruth:
Your group helped teach me my own concept of harmony. For that I wish to thank you. I would just love to buy a new CD from you all. A new jazz cd as you perform jazz so beautifully. I carry many of your tunes on my ipod. Please record a new album and come back to NYC!

Hi Ruth, you might remember me from Sully’s detail shop in Milford (Kar Kare). I managed the shop and detailed your cars. Once helped your daughter fix a damaged tail light before Mike found out…LOL!

Anyway, you look great as always. I don’t get back to Milford/Hopedale much these days but next time I would love to ssee ya to say hi!

God bless! Keep smiling1

Still a huge fan!
