Call for Papers: PopMatters Celebrates The Jam in Massive Special Section

New CDs This Week: Bob Dylan, Wilco and more… (Streaming)

Tuesday, Apr 28, 2009

Bob Dylan: Together Through Life—The big release of the week comes from one of the most important songwriters in pop music history. Dylan has been undergoing something of a renaissance late in life, working at a pace many younger musicians can’t match. Together Through Life came together on the road last year and is something of a bonus to fans, coming hot on the heels of 2008’s critically acclaimed The Bootleg Series Vol. 8: Tell Tale Signs.

Wilco: Ashes of American Flags DVD—2009 has been a great year for tour documentaries so far with recent releases from Arcade Fire and the Hold Steady. Wilco gets into the act with this film directed by Christoph Green and Fugazi’s Brendan Canty and covering the band’s 2008 tour. Naturally there are lots of interview segments interspersed between the live performances. The film also secured screenings at a number of film festivals including the Big Sky Film Festival.

Kermit Ruffins: Livin’ a Treme Life —Ruffins keeps the flame of traditional New Orleans jazz alight with his recordings and regular weekly concert gig at Nola’s Vaughan’s Bar. His new record keeps deliciously to the script as Ruffins continues in his quest to preserve a historic musical legacy.

Ben Folds: Ben Folds Presents: University a Cappella! —Ben Folds’ career takes an unorthodox turn with his new album. Joining with several university a cappella choirs to reimagine his work, Folds steps back and lets the kids be the star of the show. It’s a surprising and revealing turn for a pop star.

A Camp: Colonia —Less a group proper and more a foil for the Cardigan’s lead singer Nina Persson, A Camp is the moniker for the Swedish popper’s solo career. The album includes a duet with fellow Swede Nicolai Dunger and collaborations between Persson and her hubby, former Shudder to Think member Nathan Larson.
