On Mythomania, Cryptacize’s energetic pop is full of sharp edges and hard stops. They pull the listener around on the album, jumping from frenetic sound to frenetic sound. The bounce of “Mane & Tail” cuts to the quick thump of “What You Can’t See Is”. Spikes of funky guitar drive “Blue Tears”, while the title track shuffles along on shimmering piano. But with all their sound-jumping and bubbly pep, they still find moments to rise above their lean pop and soar. “The Loving Son” grows on a brooding, intense buzz. “Gotta Get Into This Feeling” is fragile pop bliss, as is the album’s longest track “Galvanize”, which starts with humble piano and expands into a touching, blue light number. In short, Mythomania is varied and surprising. It can make you dance, it can break your heart, and it will keep you listening from beginning to end. With their second album, Cryptacize have given us something much more sure-footed, and with a little more depth, than what we’ve heard before. They sound for all the world like a confident, seasoned pop band here, and one well worth checking out.
