Three Sisters

Three Sisters is not just the title of a famous play by Anton Chekhov but also the roster of the Americana band, the Lovell Sisters. The Georgia gals (Jessica, fiddle and vocals; Megan, Dobro and vocals; and Rebecca, mandolin, guitar and vocals) write, play and sing with lots of good time gusto. The trio’s original tunes have merit. One song on the new album, “Distance”, won grand prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest’s country category. And the covers show the sisters have taste as well, ranging from the somber, traditional “In the Time of My Dyin’” to the lilting pop of Eric Kaz’s “Blowin’ Away”. While the three are accomplished instrumentalists, the real attraction here is the beautiful vocal harmonies of the three women. Their voices blend together beautifully in a high, lonesome way that recalls the great country sibling acts of old. One usually equates this with male acts, like the Louvin, Stanley and Everly Brothers, but these sisters show that no single gender owns this magical way of combining vocals.
