“[T]he 14 songs,” writes Canyon Cody, one half of the duo Granada Douaba, “correspond with the 14 chapters of my accompanying academic text about the global roots of local [Andalusian] music.” Cody is a Fulbright Scholar visiting Andalusia in Spain for his studies, and his “partner in grime” is a rapper and producer named Gnotes. The album is not as static as the words “academic text” suggest. It’s closer to an astute remix project. Sometimes the mix veers toward Spanish side of Andalusia—behold the flamenco guitar in “Flamencologia”. Sometimes it veers toward the Arab world—witness the repetitive patterning of “Nunca Fui a Granada”. It prefers ease to excitement, bringing a flamenco singer into ” La Senda del Abuelo”—only to fade her out a few seconds later. The album is free to download via Creative Commons licensing, and Gnotes is featuring some remixes on his blog. Not Radio Tarifa but not bad. And free is always nice.
