Not much is known about the Brooklyn-based band Boogie Boarder. Some say the ghost of Dick Dale entered the soul of a disgruntled Domino’s delivery driver and forced him to compel British Sea Power to change direction and join his new band. Others are positive it is a Camper Van Beethoven side project executive produced by Brian Wilson. Thanks to painstaking Internet research, Boogie Boarder is actually a quartet of pizza loving, video gaming, lo-fi surf-rock slackers. With this kind of sound and its influences, it is doubtful the band has any serious global ambitions. A bigger budget would only ruin the fuzzy garage charm of its recordings and may inadvertently inhibit the band’s ability to not take themselves seriously, an ability that expresses itself in the wonderfully childish comic booklet that doubles as cover art and liner notes. Pizza Hero contains the perfect kind of rock to smoke a joint and get stupid to as is. Don’t pressure it to be anything it’s not. Just let it roll.

Boogie Boarder’s approach is quite honestly much truer to the original spirit of surf music than any standard tremolo-ed guitar lick backed by rumbling drums has been in a long while.
