There’s a thin film of folky dust on the Everyday Visuals’ latest self-titled record, but that dust coats a shimmering and sublime pop sound. And sublime is the word, since Christopher Pappas and crew take human voices plus the sound created by wood and wire and turn them into a thick vapor. Straight from the hushed invocation of “Intro (Morning Star)” to the power pop of “Limb from Limb” to the pastoral bliss of “Florence Foster Jenkins”, the album draws you into its late-summer haze and never lets you out. These are tightly constructed pop songs with sharp melodies and every note perfectly in place. What’s more, it never feels contained or polished. The airy wave of vocals during the chorus of “I’ll Take It All in Stride”, the echoing guitars on “Daydream Ghosts”—these are the moments that indicate to you emotion wins over craft. As this album reaches out, that vapor wraps around you. It feels like a pretty good fit.
