Comprised of members of the Brooklyn-based old-time revivalists O’Death, Skeletonbreath has been called “Halloween music”. In actuality, however, this largely instrumental project should not conjure up images of black cats and goblins. Instead, it should bring to mind a dusty, Americana version of the Dirty Three. Violinist Bob Pycior explores his instrument in ways he never could within the confines of O’Death on Eagle’s Nest, Devil’s Cave, the trio’s second overall release. Flanked by the backing of drummer Tris Palozzolo and bassist Andrew Platt, Pycior and company craft 10 enjoyable tunes that harbor the feel of an old Fleischer brothers cartoon reel taking a wrong left-hand turn into The Decline of Western Civilization. In short, Skeletonbreath offers up a sound unlike anyhing happening in Brooklyn. Fans of such noir rock greats as Skeleton Key and Morphine take note.
