Clare and the Reasons

Arrow

(Frog Stand)

US release date: 20 October 2009

UK release date: 20 October 2009

By Sarah Moore

Arrow shoots into the heart with spritely voiced Clare Manchon at the bow. Her husband, Olivier, collaborates with her as well as a cast of characters that includes members of the National, Beirut, and My Brightest Diamond. The various instrumentation (cellos, violins, kazoos, saws, recorders, etc.) does not sound cluttered; instead, it combines a set of precise arrangements and enveloping lyrics. Manchon’s sweet and lofty vocals charm the listener with a blend of chamber pop and twee. With lyrics like, “We’ve got all the wine / The weather’s fine” and “I’ve got a feeling I’m not missing a thing”, “All the Wine” intoxicates. An excellent cover of Genesis’ “That’s All” is sure to please, as the tuba provides the bassline and brings a certain humor to the song.
