A Face Made of Wood, the debut EP from White Pines (The pseudonym of prominent Michigan folkster Joseph Scott), walks the eternal fine line. Simply put, the sound presented by one of Michigan’s most prominent musicians is unclassifiable. Rustic enough to be alt-folk yet hooky enough to try its hand at the acoustic-pop game, the EP makes one thing certain: The five tracks are laden with the kind of adroit songwriting that will soon separate Scott from folk imitators. “Wolves Will Shiver” has the makings of a classic soundtrack song, bringing forth a weighty personal struggle set to a chugging melody. It was all this writer could do not to book a ticket to the frozen forests of Michigan to see where Scott drew inspiration from. Weighty stuff, maybe. But with a sound this honest and rootsy, its tough not to be seduced by A Face Made of Wood.
