Giant Hand

Coming Home

(Empty Room; US: 12 Jun 2009; UK: Import)

Ottawa-based singer-songwriter Kirk Ramsay lets his freak flag fly with pride and a deft sense of character on Coming Home, Giant Hand’s debut full-length. Many songwriters holding down the fort in the freak-folk genre make obvious-and-unnecessary attempts to break their songs apart into unlistenable fractures, all in the name of preserving art, yet Ramsay’s approach is remarkable. Ramsay has crafted a confident, mature listen for such a young artist. It’s one where the spooky turns in each track, including on the stomping “The Villagers Hate This Villager”, happen so soundly one barely notices. Listeners are lulled into Ramsay’s murky underworld where his warbly voice seduces with a literate ease. Ramsay’s ability to spin haunting tales over simple yet well-crafted acoustic stomps is what has lead many Canadians to take note. Light a candle late at night, and do the same.
