Teenage Catgirls & the Mystery Lightshow is a release truly from another era. Some may find similarities between the record’s all-out, raw, riff-heavy blues assault and those of Jack White’s finer, earlier records. If you want to understand the true inspiration behind the murky and effortlessly brazen debut record from the Mystery Lights, you’ll have to open up the massive vault that is Nuggets. Each and every cut on the release hurdles with a certain efficiency that is never polished but always entertaining. This is psych for purists. Particularly groovy is “Melody Lane (Part 2)” which switches tempos between a greasy surf-rock gem and a wandering psych freak-out with the kind of callous wonder you’d think was exclusive to the heydays of the Fillmore West.
