The men of Failures’ Union are four guys from Buffalo, New York, who share a common love for the melodic indie rock of the ‘90s. The Queen City had two of the best bands of that era in the Goo Goo Dolls and Tugboat Annie, and while Failures’ Union is not on par with the best of those bands’ prime output, there is no disputing they are cut from the same thrift store cloth. They also seem to have inherited their predecessors’ knowing way around a hook. There are some Buffalo Tom and Connells moments in the guitars, but for the most part I’d peg Failures’ Union frontman Tony Flaminio as sounding like an upstate New York version of Wedding Present mainman David Gedge mixed with a healthy dose of Robin Wilson from Gin Blossoms.  Wending through the 11 tracks, you’ll get a nice cross-section of the best of ‘90s indie rock as purveyed by the aforementioned bands, capped with a delightful guest appearance from Angie Hart of Frente! on two tracks. My favorite track is probably “Comb”, but there is much for the average power-pop or indie rocker to enjoy on In What Way.
