While the world waits for the anticipated debut LP from psych-pop revivalists Brown Recluse, making sure you check out the Philadelphia-based band’s latest EP, The Soft Skin. While its cover might seem like a nod to the legendary Britpop mystery men the La’s, the sound this group conveys on the four-song follow-up to 2006’s Black Sunday EP is a further enhancement of the lush, pastoral ear candy these guys have been working hard to perfect. And as evident on songs such as “Rotten Tangerines” and “Rainy Saturday”, cut at 45 RPM speed to achieve maximum sonic velocity, it seems as though the band’s Odessey and Oracle-era Zombies-translate-the-Os Mutantes-songbook style is reaching an exciting climax. With each listen of this excellent EP, that upcoming to-be-titled full-length seems more and more promising.
