Robin Guthrie

Sunflower Stories

(Darla; US: 23 Feb 2010; UK: 15 Mar 2010)

Former Cocteau Twins guitarist Robin Guthrie’s new EP Sunflower Stories doesn’t break new stylistic ground for the Scotsman, but that’s what makes it a pleasantly effective short-form release.  Sticking to a concise three- to four-minute length per song, the four-track EP offers bite-sized instrumental nuggets that perfectly encapsulate Guthrie’s trademark sound, a beautifully fragile style where dulcet arpeggios ring amongst vaporous guitar textures (and has long since spawned numerous progeny amongst the dream pop and shoegaze tributaries of pop music). Issued by Darla in a limited release of 1,000 copies, Sunflower Stories isn’t so essential that there will be a gaping hole in your record collection if you miss out on it. Nevertheless, it’s a tasty portion of dream pop, and if you are unfamiliar with Guthrie’s music, it’s the perfect pocket-sized introduction to the type of guitar stylings the man made his name on.
