The Calgary-based trio No More Shapes occupies a musical space where plaintive chamber jazz, hard bop, and electronic noise meet in a violent yet pleasing head-on collision. With their first album Creesus Crisis, these guys nailed the combination pretty well. Occasionally aggressive in sound and constantly effortless in nature, No More Shapes is the sort of trio that can make you forget that they are only a trio. This is not to say that the members multitask their way through every song (though guitarist Jay Crocker will double up on electronics), but rather they refuse to let themselves fall into the same old trappings that you have come to suspect with trio jazz combos. Crocker, trombonist J.C. Jones and drummer Eric Hamelin are like mad scientists turned loose in the lab, feeding off one each others’ talents and eccentricities until you swear you think they are at least a quartet.
