Sometimes an artist can be a genre unto themselves, and it’s very nice when they go out of their way to name that genre for you. In the case of Columbus, Ohio’s Electric Grandmother, that genre is sitcom-core—the art of using crappy sitcoms from the ‘80s and ‘90s as inspiration for electronic music. The Electric Grandmother has spun at least six albums from this formula, over time expanding his targets beyond just TV shows to a mix of topics within the pop culture realm. On Listening Party, his latest, he goes after irritating neighbors, New Coke, Pauly Shore, and the short-lived TV show Dinosaurs. As silly as the overall package is, the Electric Grandmother has been adding to his sound ever so slowly, making tracks like “Guyliner” and “The Alexvanderpoolera” (a random reference to a Boyz II Men video) some surprisingly pleasant listens.
