ShareComing off like Galaxie 500 with louder amps on this four-song EP, Gospel Gossip conjure up an echo-laden haze of guitar distortion, a perfect match for singer Sarah Neinaber’s impressionistic lyrics. Drawing from shoegaze, dream pop, and ‘90s American indie rock, Gospel Gossip’s shapeless textures project an emotional inarticulacy that nonetheless has the effect of instilling the listener with a transcendent urge. It helps matters that Neinaber can hold her own amidst the blizzard of sound, occasionally recalling Bjork in how she twists and phrases her words (particularly on the tide-like surging of “Chores”). Drift can be indistinct at times, but it’s worth it when the band balances that tendency out with moments like the finale of “Blazin”, where the pounding drums help drive the song to a dramatic finish.
