Everybody has a dead letter department, so to speak, on their desktops, be it a cache of old Word doc drafts, JPEGs of exes, or MP3s of a God-awful band you downloaded for the sake of curiosity. Jonny Trunk, UK electronic music maven and CEO of the formidable Trunk Records imprint, took the bits of samples, found sounds, and beats he had on deck for the recycle bin on his old CPU and crafted a whole album from the sonic compost. The end result is Scrapbook, a 20-piece suite that straddles the line separating Martin Denny and Aphex Twin, compiled alphabetically on the track listing and containing snippets of throat-less men, dialogue about wife swapping, Japanese choirs, grand pianos, and other assorted off-the-wall ephemera blended into a film score-like flow that comes off a lot better than you might think. Even the totally kitschy cover comes from an old school scrapbook Trunk found at an antiques market. Fans of vintage Warp, Stones Throw at their strangest, and Rephlex Records need to take a peek inside this most impressive Scrapbook.
