As a source of new listening for established Wild Beasts fans, the recent release of the We Still Got the Taste Dancing On Our Tongues EP is a little lacking. One album track, one previously-released B-side, one remix, and one live track does not typically make for an essential purchase. This EP isn’t necessarily for the die-hards, however. Following Wild Beasts’ appearance on the shortlist for the Mercury Prize, it seems Domino wanted some way to showcase them to an audience who may be hearing them for the first time. As such a showcase, this is perfect. The title track is probably the most impressive exhibition of Hayden Thorpe’s ridiculous-yet-beautiful Hegarty-meets-Yorke vocal style on Wild Beasts’ most recent album Two Dancers, while “Through the Iron Gate”, originally released on the limited vinyl version of Two Dancers’ first single “Hooting & Howling”, displays the versatility of that voice by allowing it to travel from creepy falsetto to primal scream in a matter of seconds. The other two tracks reveal Wild Beasts’ embarrassment of riches in the vocal department by highlighting those of bassist Tom Fleming. Remixer Jon Hopkins wisely allows Fleming’s almost deadpan vocal to remain a centerpiece of “Two Dancers (ii)”, while the acoustic take on LP debut Limbo, Panto‘s “Devil’s Crayon” puts that voice right out in front, with no distracting production to detract from it. The We Still Got the Taste Dancing On Our Tongues EP is a fantastic little thing that can be played over and over again without a hint of fatigue; it suitably whets the appetite for a Wild Beasts release of something that hasn’t been heard before in some form or another.
