Still Flyin'

A Party in Motion

(Ernest Jenning; US: 27 Jul 2010; UK: 4 Oct 2010)

Still Flyin’s new four-song EP is leaner, more ‘electronic’, and a lot less likely to spur use of the word ‘ska’ than their previous album, Never Gonna Touch the Ground. At first, A Party in Motion is an apt title. That’s always been their essential sound. Opening track “Bull Riff” gets right into a groove. Closer “Higher Than Five” builds into just as danceable a track.

At the same time, there’s a melancholy feeling to this party. It continually feels like they’re capturing a state of being in-between, trying to figure out where they are and where they’re headed, starting with the mysterious question in “Bull Riff”: “What is this? / I slipped into a bull riff”. The words in “Strength” have a lot to do with figuring out what matters, trying “to do what is important and stop whatever’s not”. In a way, that seems a question for our time. Both “Neu Idea” (which starts “No idea where we are going”) and the eight-minute surfing song “Higher Than Five” find them wondering what’s next. The thing is, as a band it sounds like they’ve found it, like they’re moving forward, hesitantly or not, in a new direction.

Dave Heaton has been writing about music on a regular basis since 1993, first for college newspapers and DIY fanzines and now mostly on the Internet. In 2000, the same year he started writing for PopMatters, he founded the online arts magazine ErasingClouds.com, for which he is still the editor and main writer. He also writes music reviews for the print magazine The Big Takeover and has a blog column on their website, BigTakeover.com. He has a Bachelors degree in Journalism (1996) and a Masters degree in English (1999), both from Truman State University, in the underrated town of Kirksville, Missouri, Though he does enough music-listening and writing for it to be a full-time job, it is not one. He has held a series of editing, writing and business communications positions at small and large companies in Kansas, Michigan and Pennsylvania. He currently lives in Kansas City.

Party we want to, not just because the band taps into a kind of quintessential party feeling, but because its members seem friendly and have a lot of positive energy, plus nice harmonies.
