Things are vague with Arkhonia. The press release does not give much background on the band, or jz-arkh, the UK collaborative to which Arkhonia claims half. This sense of mystery does great favors for the music of Trails/Traces, which feels like taking a late-night nap in the sky, upon a cloud, with Brian Eno. The foundation of Arkhonia’s drone is a delicately delivered white noise, something like an eternal Hoover, that ends up being the album’s cozy bed. From there, the ebb is free to flow through song titles like “AAOpening”, “BCTrails”, “CDTraces”, and so on. Chords come and go, large amounts of space go almost uninhabited, and it’s safe to say that the sounds can transport you. For a drone collage, it does what a fan of experimental electronica would want. As a listening experience, it is all-encompassing. Nicely done, Arkhonia—whoever the hell you are.
