Jed and Lucia’s second album is a low-key collection of songs that combines folky, acoustic guitar-based songwriting with electronic textures. The couple harmonize nicely together, making everything on Superhuman Heart pleasant to listen to. “Pleasant” is really the best adjective to describe their music. Whether it’s the sparse opener “April Showers”, the subtly complex rhythms of “Apostrophe”, the catchy “Made of Stone” or the synth washes of “California”, everything on the album goes down easy.

These are superficially interesting songs, but they don’t really stick with the listener after the album is over. The more challenging tracks, like the minor-key “On Lockdown” or the ambience-laden “Painted Stairs”, allow the duo to stretch their sound but aren’t particularly memorable. Still, even if Jed and Lucia don’t quite have the melodic hooks figured out, Superhuman Heart is a solid effort. With strong vocals and a nice blending of acoustic and electronic elements, this album is worth checking out for fans of the burgeoning electronic-folk scene.
