Since the band’s formation in 2007, MakeUpBreakUp, which hails from Providence, RI, has earned a reputation for being a wee bit obsessed with the 1980s. One can certainly imagine the bells of romance ringing betwixt Molly Ringwald and that dude who played Jake Ryan to the sound of the group’s updated version of Qwest Records synthpop—a sonic flavor that continues to evolve into its own unique mutant strain on the trio’s full-length debut, Scents. Across nine new cuts, MakeUpBreakUp employ more guitars and give songs like “My Way, to the Top” and “Better Days” a sense of grit its prior EPs never achieved. It’s a hint of what Duran Duran might have sounded like had they recorded for SST instead of Capitol Records.
